George Daniel Stevenson

of Palmerston passed away peacefully at Freeport Hospital, Kitchener on Friday, August 18, 2017 in his 88th year. Beloved husband of the late Marjorie (Rogers) Stevenson (2008). Father of five treasured sons and their families, David George Stevenson and his partner Mihaela and grandpa to Andreea and Victor; Timothy Allan Stevenson and his wife Joan and grandpa to Nicholas, Oliver and Jacqueline; Ian Douglas Stevenson and his wife Wendy and grandpa to Ashley and her fiance Jason,and Brody; Robert James Stevenson and his wife Anita and grandpa to Joshua and Alexander; Jeffery Peter Stevenson and his wife Marilee and grandpa to Ellen, William, Michael and Adam. Brother of Jean Aulthouse. Fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews and friends. Predeceased by his parents James and Emily (Parsons) Stevenson,  sister Dorothy and brothers James and Gordon.

George grew up in Woodstock, Ontario, attended and graduated from local elementary schools and the Woodstock Collegiate Institute. Upon graduation from Secondary School George attended the London Normal School and graduated in 1951.  His degree work was taken at the University of Windsor and the University of Western Ontario where he graduated.  He also took courses at Wayne State University in Detroit.  His teaching career took him to Windsor where he was a classroom teacher for five years.  At this point he became an Elementary School Principal and served in this capacity until 1970.  That year he was hired by the Ontario Ministry of Education, Special Education Branch, to become the Principal of the Education Program for the Mentally Challenged at Midwestern Regional Centre in Palmerston.  After George’s retirement from teaching in 1986, he served in the capacity as co-ordinator of Senior Support Services in the North of Wellington County for seven and a half years.  George was a member of Blair Masonic Lodge #314, Peace Chapter #52, Order of the Eastern Star, and the Palmerston United Church. Many of George’s interests over the years were music, Woodstock Boys and Girls band in his youth, Saints Band and the Palmerston United Church Senior Choir in later years.  He served as a Scout Youth leader, Executive member and served as President of the Scout District.  Serving the community was important to George and he volunteered with the March of Dimes, Senior Citizen Groups, served as president of the Palmerston Chapter of the Cancer Society, the Arthritis Society and held many various positions at the Churches in Windsor and Palmerston.  George also drove for Meals on Wheels for over thirty years.  He will be missed.  George and his wife Marjorie were “Doers” a legacy to Palmerston.

The family will receive friends at the Heritage Funeral Home, Palmerston on Tuesday, August 22, 2017 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held in the Palmerston United Church on Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Interment in Innerkip Cemetery
