Robert Keith Ames
February 3, 1935 – July 6, 2026
It is with sadness in our hearts we announce the passing of Robert “Keith” Ames, at the age of 91, peacefully in his home with family by his side on Monday, July 6, 2026.
He was beloved husband of the late Donna (Werner) Ames (2023) for 65 years. Dear father of Andrew (Nuala) Ames, Derrick Ames and Tracy (Nelson) Hall. Grandfather of Jason (Rosemary), Steffler, Christine (Dan) Holloway, Michael (Kate) Ames, Jonathan (Lauren) Ames, Joshua Ames, Rachel Ames, Hayley (Dustin) Nicklasson and Great Grandfather of Dakota, Charlie & Aria Ames, Annabelle & Caleb Steffler, Landon & Taylen Nicklasson and Delilah Holloway. Fondly remembered by his nieces, nephews, and many wonderful friends whom he considered family.
Keith was born on February 8, 1935, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. At just 17 years old, he left home in search of adventure and joined the Royal Canadian Navy, where he worked in the medical services. It was there that he met the love of his life and future wife, Donna Werner. Keith had a natural gift for encouraging others, and his role gave him many opportunities to support the men on board. This caring spirit remained with him throughout his life and was evident in the way he loved and encouraged his family and friends.
When their children came along, Donna persuaded Keith to leave the Navy in pursuit of a more stable family life. They settled in Esquimalt, British Columbia, where Keith became a pharmaceutical sales representative for Ayerst Laboratories. His territory covered Vancouver Island, and the family often accompanied him on his travels, exploring the island together. Those years were filled with great friends, fishing, golf, and adventures along the coast.
In 1976, after Donna’s father suffered a stroke in Toronto, he asked Keith and Donna to help with the family’s automotive business (Beeline). Never one to shy away from a new adventure, they uprooted their family and moved to Ontario. Once the company was thriving again, Keith went on to own a career management firm, a window blind franchise and finally into financial services, where he worked until his retirement.
Sixteen years ago, Keith suffered a debilitating stroke that took away his speech and ability to read. Despite these challenges, he maintained a remarkably cheerful disposition. Keith and Donna later moved in with their daughter who lovingly cared for them during the final chapters of their lives, a gift for which the family will always be grateful.
Keith will be remembered for his exceptional work ethic, his unwavering Christian faith, his deep devotion to family, and his lifelong love of sports. Even after his stroke, he enjoyed playing cards and more often than not, he won. He also remained interested in world events and appreciated keeping up with the news.
His legacy of love, compassion, service, and faith will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. We will especially miss seeing him standing at the end of the driveway, waving until we disappeared from view, a simple gesture that perfectly reflected the love he had for his family.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the outstanding doctors, nurses, and medical staff for their compassionate care, support, and kindness throughout Keith’s final days.
A celebration of life will be held by the family at a later date.
